Sudoku has been gaining popularity by the day since around 2005 and if you think Sudoku is a Japanese past-time, think again!

The modern puzzle was invented by an American architect called Howard Garns, in 1979 and published by Dell Magazines under the name "Numbers in Place.”

It was later popularized ( in 1986 ) by the Japanese puzzle company Nikoli, under the name Sudoku, which means ‘single number’ and it became an international hit in 2005.

For the uninitiated, a sudoku is a is a logic-based placement puzzle.

A sudoku puzzle consists of nine 3×3 grids arranged in a square, some of them already filled out with numbers. The goal is to fill out the rest according to the ultimate rule: in every row, in every column, and in every 3×3 grid, there must be the numbers 1 to 9. This means that in those three confinements, any number does not repeat.

Though there is no mathematics involved, it is not as simple as it may sound. There are various strategies one can use to solve a sudoku but there are also trap-doors – for instance, once you make a mistake in a sudoku puzzle, it is very difficult to trace your mistake.

Terms associated with the grid layout and puzzle

A grid has 9 rows, columns and boxes with each having nine cells. A full grid has 81 cells. Cells are called squares, but in technical descriptions (for example if you should make it through to the World Championships) the term square is avoided since the boxes and grid are ...wait for it...also squares!

Boxes are also known as blocks or zones and 3 vertically stacked blocks make a stack. Three horizontally connected blocks however make a band. A chute is either a band or a stack. A grid has three bands, three stacks and six chutes.

The use of the boxes to partition the grid can be generalised to other equal-sized partition shapes, in this case the sub-areas are called regions, zones, subgrids, or nonets. In some cases the regions are only equal sized, not equal shaped.

Rows, columns and regions are collectively referred to as 'units' or 'scopes', of which the grid has twenty-seven. The 'One Rule' rule is that 'Each digit appears once in each unit'.

Size refers to the size of a puzzle or grid. Often a composite row × column designation is used, e.g. size 9×9. In technical discussions (should you end up on the Sudoku consultative committee at the World Championships!) size may refer to the number of cells, (81). Since the number of cells in a region must be the side dimension of the square grid, for example nine cells per block for a 9×9 grid, it is convenient to just use the region size, such as 9.

Puzzle terms

A puzzle in essence is a partially completed grid. The initially defined values (the numbers already inserted) are known as the givens or the clues. A proper puzzle has a single (unique) solution. A proper puzzle that can be solved without trial and error (guessing) is known as a satisfactory puzzle - don't ask me why!

An irreducible puzzle (also known as a minimum puzzle) is a proper puzzle from which no givens can be removed leaving it a proper puzzle (still with a single solution). It is possible to construct minimum puzzles with different number of givens. The minimum number of givens refers to the minimum over all proper puzzles and identifies a subset of minimum puzzles.

If you're at this site and reading this article, you probably already know that Sudoku is a great game to keep your brain ticking. Sudoku consists of a puzzle game based upon a 9-by-9 grid that's partially filled with numbers.

The objective is to fill the empty spaces of the grid with single digit numbers so that the same digit does not appear twice on any horizontal or vertical line.

Also, the same number should not appear twice in any of nine 3-by-3 mini grids on the screen. Sudoku began its gentle attack on us all around 2004 and many versions can now be found in countless national newspapers the world over.

Sudoku addicts are as obsessed with their puzzles as 1980s teenagers were fixated on their infuriating Rubik's cube. Just like the 1980's craze - the Rubik's cube, Sudoku gives your brain a jolly good work-out.

In actual fact, scientists say that solving them depends on neural pathways that even the most powerful computers are unable to replicate.

Researchers say that by observing how people solve the puzzles, we might one day be able to develop more intelligent and brain-like computers. Professor John Hopfield of Princeton University is currently researching the unique brain processes we use when playing Sudoku.

To crack Sudoku our brains use a unique set of neural pathways known as associative memory, Hopfield says, which enables us to discover a pattern from a partial clue. Although computer memories can hold large amounts of information and process it at great speed, they aren't yet capable of sophisticated associative memory.

Hopfield provides an algorithm of associative memory in his research paper, which - he says - could be implemented in silicon chips.

USING THE SINGLE POSITION STRATEGY

As you may already know, these free printable sudoku puzzles are numbers puzzles that need you to complete cells with the digits 1 through 9. Each row, column and box contain only one of each number & you can use many different strategies to solve them. The single position strategy, part of the scanning technique, is the easiest to use on these printable sudoku puzzles - and the one you should always start with when beginning a new sudoku puzzle.

Step 1
Choose a row. Begin with looking for the number 1. See if the digit was a given or one you already filled in for that row. If not, look at the surrounding column and boxes for help.

Step 2
Check columns and boxes to see which have a 1 in them. You can then see which cells in the row can't be a 1. By narrowing down the possibilities, see if you can figure out which cell should contain the 1.

Step 3
Continue looking for the number 1 in the columns and then the boxes. After filling in as many cells as possible, move onto the other numbers until you have finished with 9.

Step 4
Go back to looking for the number 1 and repeat the process or move onto other techniques such as single candidate or pencil markings. You can use the single position strategy at any stage while solving a sudoku puzzle.

ADVICE: Begin with easy sudoku puzzles when practicing this technique as they are quicker and easier to solve. Once you are used to the way sudoku puzzles work, move on to harder puzzles

The Rules of Sudoku

The classic Sudoku game involves a grid of 81 squares. The grid is divided into nine blocks, each containing nine squares.

The rules of the game are simple: each of the nine blocks has to contain all the numbers 1-9 within its squares. Each number can only appear once in a row, column or box.

The difficulty lies in that each vertical nine-square column, or horizontal nine-square line across, within the larger square, must also contain the numbers 1-9, without repetition or omission.

Every puzzle has just one correct solution.

Sudoku is an addicting number puzzle game that is played in all parts of the world. It is a very thrilling and exciting game. However, the Sudoku can be very difficult and tricky.

The rule for this game is to place all the numbers from 1 to 9 in each cell in the grid. The limitation is that the numbers should not be repeated in each row, column and 3 x 3 block.

Now, how will you start solving the Sudoku? The following are steps from easy to difficult Sudoku, which can be very helpful to each player of the game.

• Easy Sudoku

1. You should use careful thought in solving the puzzle. Since you already know that duplication of the numbers is not allowed in the game, you can already use that as a hint to consider other numbers. Remember, the more difficult the Sudoku, the harder it is to start the puzzle.

2. In solving an easy Sudoku, you must first prioritize the search for possibilities. These possibilities are the numbers that are possible to be placed in the row, column or block. Therefore, if you know what the possible numbers are, it would be easier for you to choose which number is suitable to go there.

3. Start working from number 1 until you are already on your way to number 9. Since you already placed in some of the numbers, this must be your clue in searching for the other numbers.

4. If you get confused, you can always go back and be sure to look at each number you have already filled in. This will help you know if you have missed a number or not. Once everything is settled, you can continue the puzzle and complete it. Now, if you still cannot find what the problem is, start labeling each 3 x 3 box with every number that can possibly fill in the box. For instance, there is an empty box left. Fill the box with possible numbers and see the result.

5. It would be advisable to begin playing a Sudoku in a newspaper or magazine. There are newspapers or magazines, which have this puzzle in their pages. The easy puzzles are usually out during Monday and Tuesday. While the difficult ones are found on the following days.

• Hard Sudoku

1. Begin using the number 1. Use similar logic you used in the easy puzzle to complete each empty row, column and block with all the possible numbers. If necessary, put possibilities. The possibilities will help you at the latter part if you have two or three choices for each box but you cannot remember them.

2. Two cells in a block, row or column should be one of two numbers, you can use those to remove other possibilities. For instance, in a 3 x 3 block, there are four empty cells. From your analysis, you have established that: cell A and B can be 1, 2, 3, 4; cell C and D can be 3 or 4. From this, you will know that cell A and B can never be 3 or 4 since they already have 1 or 2. Cell C and D have to be either of 3 or 4. This information can be very helpful in completing other boxes.

3. Know that hard Sudoku can consume more time. A hard Sudoku can even take a few days to finish, but they can give players more fun, enjoyment and contentment after they have completed the puzzle. A hard Sudoku is just the same as the easy Sudoku - both will give you less clue to begin with. The best way of solving the hard Sudoku is when you already know the possible numbers that can go in each box. If you have two candidate numbers for a specific row, column and 3 x 3 blocks, decide which of the two numbers should fill each location. This may be very confusing, but when you have applied it, you will realize that it is so simple and very useful.

4. Visit the internet. There are websites such as this one that provide free Sudoku puzzles - from easy to hard. Practice on some the sample puzzles to prepare you to a more complicated Sudoku.

Follow the steps in solving the Sudoku. And find out that no matter how difficult they may seem to be, in the end, the fun and excitement that you will feel is incomparable.

KNOW YOUR SUDOKUS

Do you remember when there was only one type of sudoku puzzle? It was a simple (or sometimes not so simple) 3×3 grid using only the numbers 1 to 9. Now, as the sudoku craze is sweeping the world, new sudoku varieties are coming out of the woodwork. There are now so many variations on the original sudoku game, that newbies just don't know where to start. Here is a quick guide to some of the newer sudoku variations with basic rules.

Standard Sudoku: This is the original sudoku game (also called Number Place). It is also referred to as a 3×3 (3 mini-grids across, 3 mini-grids down). Each mini-grid, row, and column must contain the numbers 1 through 9. There can be no duplicates in any row, column, or min-grid.

Sudoku 4×4 and 5×5: This is similar to a standard sudoku, but there are either 4 mini-grids across and down, or 5 mini-grids across and down. The 4×4 variation usually uses the numbers 1 through 16, though some versions also add in letters. The 5×5 version uses both numbers and letter. Again, no duplicate letters or numbers are permitted in rows, columns, or mini-grids.

Sudoku-X: The X factor in this puzzle is simply the addition of one rule: Each of the two corner-to-corner diagonals must not have duplicate numbers. So, in a 3×3 sudoku-x, each column, row, mini-grid, AND the two diagonals will have the numbers 1 through 9.

Alphadoku: Similar to a standard sudoku but uses letters of the alphabet instead of numbers. How many numbers used will depend on how many mini-grids are across and down.

Samurai Sudoku: Typically, 5 standard sudoku puzzles are joined together in the middle. The first 4 full sudoku puzzles are placed separately, with the fifth puzzle placed in the very center sharing a mini-grid with each of the other 4. Each full puzzle can be worked separately, but they must all follow the rules of the standard sudoku.

Killer Sudoku: A killer sudoku requires simple adding. There will still be rows, columns, and mini-grids, but the individual squares (or cells) of the puzzle will be connected (either by color or by dotted lines). There is a small number in the upper corner of the connected cells. The numbers that go in each of the connected cells must add up to this number. Killer sudokus still follow all the same rules of unique numbers.

Irregular Sudoku: These puzzles do not have square mini-grids; they are "irregular" in shape but must still contain all the numbers 1 though 9. Standard row and column rules apply. While these puzzles are not any more difficult than a standard sudoku, it does take a while to "train" your eye to recognize an irregular mini-grid shape.

As time goes on, sudoku authors create new sudoku variations and even combine the above sudoku games into a new puzzle. Imagine a Killer Sudoku X Samurai with Irregular mini-grids. Now THAT sounds like a challenge!

It is a nail-biting video from the 2009 National Sudoku Championship in Philadelphia. US and World Sudoku Champion Thomas Snyder goes for the $10,000 1st prize but writes too fast in the closing seconds and makes a mistake. Three minutes later, Tammy McLeod turns in a correct grid to win the tournament and a spot on the US Sudoku Team.

Also of note is 3rd place getter Eugene Varshavsky, seen here in his hooded sweatshirt motionless in front of his grid. He was allegedly suspected of cheating earlier on in the tournament, particularly after he could only place three digits after 8 minutes in the finals.

Scientists have discovered that solving sudoku puzzles depends on neural pathways that even the most powerful computers can't replicate.

Researchers say that by studying how people solve the puzzles, they might be able to develop more intelligent and brain-like computers.

In a recently published study, Professor John Hopfield of Princeton University explored the unique brain processes we use when playing Sudoku. This mathematical puzzle involves filling in a grid of 81 squares with varying combinations of the numbers one to nine, something that sounds simple but can be diabolically hard.

To crack Sudoku our brains use a unique set of neural pathways known as associative memory, Hopfield says, which enables us to discover a pattern from a partial clue.

Although computers can store large amounts of information and process it at great speed, they aren't yet capable of sophisticated associative memory. Hopfield provides an algorithm of associative memory in his paper, which he says could be implemented in silicon chips.

Patterns -We all recognise the basic pattern of counting from one to nine, yet the task of completing a Sudoku puzzle is confounded because of the large number of possible permutations of this pattern.

But every time we put the right number in the right place it provides us with a clue, which reduces the number of permutations.

In this way Sudoku is based on a combination of logic and intelligent guesswork based on our abilities of associative memory, Hopfield says.

"In neural terms, the signals developed ... can produce a strong and reasonably accurate feeling of correctness of the item retrieved," Hopfield says.

"This fact may account for our strong psychological feeling of 'right' or 'wrong' when we retrieve a memory from a minimal clue."

Brains versus computers - Associate Professor Andrew Paplinski is an Australian computer scientist who specialises in neural networks at Monash University in Melbourne.

He says the process described in Hopfield's paper helps us to remember a name from a fragment or recognise a partially obscured face.

He says applying Hopfield's model could lead to more accurate facial recognition computer technology.

Being able to mimic associative memory would give computers "extreme robustness of pattern recognition", Paplinski says.

For example, for a computer to recognise a partially visible face it would first have to recognise that the face is obscured, then that it is a face, and then it would have to find a match.

"To answer all these questions takes an enormous amount of computation," he says.

He says we can do this in a fraction of a second in a slow computer like our brain. So there were would be significant implications if we can figure out how this is done and design computers that can replicate it.
